Melvin (Jack Nicholson) says

The misanthropic novelist…. an obsessive compulsive writer of romance fiction working on his 62nd book.  Melvin is rude to everyone he meets, including his gay neighbour Simon (Greg Kinnear), but when he has to look after Simon’s dog (Verdell) he begins to soften.

Melvin eats at the same restaurant everyday despite his superstitions and pathological fear of germs and takes an interest in Carol (Helen Hunt) who is the only waitress who tolerates his behaviour.
